  • The purpose of this research is to describe the students' metacognition process in solving mathematical problems based on field dependent and field independent cognitive styles. Therefore the type of this research is descriptive research with qualitative approach. This research was carried out in one of the junior high schools in Kab. Malang. The location of the study was chosen because this school was a school whose learning had arrived at the material used in the research instrument. In addition, there is no research on student metacognition in the selected school so that the authenticity of the results obtained is better. The research subjects were 4 class VII students each of 2 subjects representing each cognitive style group based on GEFT questionnaire analysis. The researcher took 2 subjects in each group of cognitive styles to compare students' metacognitive processes in solving problems in terms of different cognitive styles. The results showed that at the stage of plan development, the field dependent metacognition process of students in the field dependent cognitive style was aware of its existence in the problem solving process, specific knowledge about the problems faced, but lacking in knowledge of strategies to solve problems. then at the stage of implementation of the plan, field dependent students are aware of their knowledge in monitoring the strategies needed, how, and when to use them in solving problems. in the final stage, namely the stage of evaluating the results. Field dependent students turn out to be aware of their thinking processes and thinking capacity but not on the results of their thinking. On the other hand, the metacognition process of field independent students at an early stage is the development of a conscious plan about its existence in the process of solving problems, specific knowledge of the problems faced, and knowledge of strategies to solve problems. The next stage, namely the implementation stage of the plan. At this stage, students field independent students aware of their knowledge in monitoring the strategies needed, how, and when to use them in solving problems. then in the final stage of evaluating the results, field independent students realize the importance of implementing this stage as a tool to ensure the correctness of completion and it appears that field independent students are aware of the processes and results of thinking, thinking capacity, and self limitations when solving problems.
