- This study aims to analyze and describe students' relational understanding in proving mathematical induction. This type of research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Subjects in the study were 3students 5th semester mathematics educationat the University of Muhammadiyah Malang in 2018, namely one subject with a high achievement index (IP), one subject with a moderate achievement index (IP) and one subject with a grade point average (IP) to see variations each subject. The instruments in this study used tests to measure students' relational understanding of mathematical induction proofs and interview guidelines that were used to strengthen data from tests and to know the ability of student arguments to prove mathematical induction more deeply. Data processing techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students with high GPA had excellent relational understanding because they met all indicators of relational understanding appropriately, students with a GPA were having a good relational understanding because they performed indicators of relational understanding inappropriately while students with low GPA had understanding relational that is not good because it is not able to do all indicators
