  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the problem solving ability, the process of thinking and errors of students in solving open ended problems in mathematics learning by giving Scaffolding. This study uses a qualitative approach and this type of research is descriptive. Subjects in this study were the eighth grade students of MTs Salafiyah Syafiiyah Bandung Jombang in the even semester of 2017/2018 school year, totaling 25 students. Data collection methods used in this study are tests and interviews. The results showed that the open ended mathematical problem-solving ability in mathematics learning by giving scaffolding showed the stage of understanding the problem of good category, the stage of planning a solution, the stage of planning a solution and the last step which was drawing good conclusions. This means that the ability possessed by students is directly proportional to the problem solving abilities possessed. The process of thinking of students in solving open mathematical problems in mathematics learning by providing scaffolding through the stages of thinking is obtained that each individual is different, but the steps taken in doing problem solving remain at one goal to get the right end result. Students' errors in problem solving show that there are still many students who do various kinds of errors, especially in the indicator of reading problems by 13,33%, understanding the problem by 20%, transformation of problems by 24%, process skills by 25,33%, and writing the final answer is as big as 28%. However, the mistakes made by students also vary depending on the abilities possessed and the problems that are being faced in the problem.
