Daftar Isi:
- Background: Stress is a condition caused by the interaction between the individual and the environment, causing a perception of the distance between the demands stemming from a situation stemming from the biological, psychological and social systems of a person. The process of stress is the hypothalamus that controls two neuroendocrine systems, the sympathetic system and the adrenal cortex system will stimulate the release of a group of hormones including cortisol when the body is stressed. Stress hormone will suppress the immune system that adversely affect the health and quality of life of the elderly. Stress will cause a variety of complaints, including heartbeats accelerate, cold sweat, restless, often feeling confused, talking fast, changing appetite, gemeteran. Methods for lowering stress levels with pharmacological and nonpharmacological, anti-anxious and anti-depressant are pharmacological and nonpharmacologic methods of progressive relaxation. The mechanism of progressive relaxation work on the level of stress slows down or weakens the workings of the body's internal tools. As a result, there is a decrease in heart rate, breathing rhythm, blood pressure, muscle tension, metabolic rate, and the production of stress hormones. This study aims to determine the decrease in stress level of elderly in nursing home Malang, Method: This research method used pre experimental with pretest-posttest control group design involving 30 respondents with purposive sampling. The sample consisted of the experimental group observed before the intervention (pretest), then observed again after the intervention (posttest). The data obtained were analyzed by Paired t-test. Result: The result of Paired t-test test result is 0,000 (p <0,05), so it can be concluded that H0 is rejected, which means there is a difference of stress level to decrease stress level of elderly of nursing home of Malang. Discussion: Progressive relaxation exercises performed regularly are shown to decrease stress levels, when muscle tension that works is the sympathetic nerves and during relaxed working parasympathetic nerves that will reverse stress effects involving the parasympathetic portion of the central nervous system.
