- The core of it’s research is seeks to find the meaning of how director ‘The Photograph’ constructs social interactions between ethnic Chinese and indigenous people. And the purpose of this research is to find the meaning behind the interaction between Chinese and native as constructed by the director of the film The Photograph. John Fiske's semiotic analysis is used with a three-level table of television codes which is called reality level, representation level and ideology level. The unit of analysis in this study is 12 scenes which according to researchers can represent the representation of the director in describing the interaction of ethnic Chinese with indigenous people. After that, all of the analysis units were included in the semiotic framework 3 level Fiske ‘Television Codes’ semiotic. In general, social interaction can be defined as dynamic social relationships involving relationships between individuals, between human groups, and between individuals and human groups (Gillin and Gillin in Soekanto, 1997: 67). And then, Chinese ethnic is a sub-culture in the form of a group rooted in race from Chinese descent. Indigenous can be interpreted by the inhabitants or native peoples of a country (even though it may be just a belief) but has a strong bond with the country where he comes from and resides. The meaning of semiotics in short is a study of signs and how the signs work (Fiske, 1982: 66). And the general definition of film is a mass communication media consisting of a series of signs (Sobur, 2003: 131), in the form of pictures and sounds and also has a storyline. After did analysis, the researcher drew several conclusions, namely: First, the anatomical-ethnic interaction in this film can be interpreted into 3 types, namely Accommodation, Assimilation and Conflict. Second, the ideology contained in the third level of John Fiske's television code is: Chinese ethnic’s primordialism gives the effect of Chinese ethnicity in social interacting; the colonization of ethnic Chinese as a result of primordialism; Chinese people respond to move away from others in interaction with other ethnicities as a result of political and social policies, while indigenous natives give a move to face others in interpersonal interaction as a responses as a form of communication between rural and urban communities and ethnocentric attitudes of each ethnic group. Third, how interactions constructed cannot be used as a reference for the representation of ethnic Chinese and indigenous social interactions in the real world.
