  • Background: Infectious disease is one of the main causes of mortality worldwide. Some of the bacteria that can cause disease are Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Many plants can be used as traditional medicine. Jatropha gossypifolia leaves and stem barkss Anacardium occidental is a plant that has antibacterial activity. Objective: The aim of this study to identify the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract combination from Jatropha gossypifolia leaves and Anacardium occidental stem barks to S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Method: The test of antibacterial activity with ethanol extract combination from Jatropha gossypifolia leaves and Anacardium occidental stem barks using discs diffusion method. The combination of ethanol extract was made with three ratios: 50:100 mg/mL; 25:100 mg/mL and 25:200 mg/mL for S.aureus and E.coli bacteria. Results and Conclusions: The results have shown that a combination of ethanolic extracts of Jatropha gossypifolia leaves and barks of Anacardium occidentale have antibacterial activity toward S. aureus and E.coli bacteria. The results of the inhibition to S. aureus bacteria is 15.50 mm (50:100), 14.88 mm (25:100) and 16.28 mm (25:200). While the E.coli bacteria is 14.18 mm (50:100), 13.12 mm (25:100) and 13.68 mm (25:200). Chloramphenicol (30 μg/disk) used as positive controls showed antibacterial activity of the inhibition to S.aureus bacteria is 22,28 mm while the E.coli bacteria is 27,43 mm. DMSO 10% used as negative controls can’t inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli bacteria.
