- The greeting words are a set of words, morphemes, phrases or expressions, being utilized to greet or start a conversation with the other person in a language event. The greeting word can be categorized as an element of language that is crucial in communicating since the existence of greeting words helps us in terms of recognizing to whom the speech is intended. It can be seen from one of the processes of social interaction that takes place in the Mojosari public traditional market environment. Thus, the formulation of the problem in this study are (1) how the greeting words are used by sellers and customers in the Mojosari Public Traditional Market (2) how the greeting word functions are utilized by sellers and customers in the Mojosari public traditional market. The employed method in this research was descriptive-qualitative research method. The data and sources of data in this study were speeches or sentences that contained greeting words, being displayed in conversations or utterances between buyers and sellers in the public traditional market of Mojosari. The data collection technique in this study was referring, engaging, noting and surveying techniques, with this technique, the researchers found a reference in finding greeting data. Departing from theose processes, several forms of greeting words were found including the form of greeting words based on (1) gender, (2) age, (3) social status, and (4) kinship. In addition, two functions of greeting words were found, viz. (1) the function of familiarity and (2) the function of respect. From the results of the analysis and discussion, it was concluded that in the interaction of buying and selling at the Public Traditional Market of Mojosari, various forms of greeting words were found which were determined through several factors such as (1) gender differences, (2) age, (3) social status, ( 4) kinship that leads to the form of familiarity between speakers and the speech partners. The difference was directed to distinguish among greetings for someone who is younger, peer, or older. In addition, it could be seen from the social status and closeness between the speakers and the speech partners. Hence, there will be differences in the use of greetings. The use of greetings can be utilized for people who already know or not with a specific purpose. Each form of the utilized greeting in the interaction of buying and selling at the public traditional market in Mojosari had a function that can reflect the level of closeness between the speaker and the partner. The level of closeness is divided into several parts such as (1) the level of closeness that leads to familiarity, and (2) the level of closeness that leads to respect. Each of these functions, can be adjusted based on the context of use.
