  • The purpose of this study was to investigate; 1) the objective of teaching speaking at SMAN 02 Batu, 2) the topic of teaching speaking at SMAN 02 Batu, 3) the technique of teaching speaking at SMAN 02 Batu, and 4) the evaluation technique in teaching speaking at SMAN 02 Batu. This research used descriptive research design because there was no control of treatment as it is in experimental research. The subject of this study was two English teachers of the first year at SMAN 02 Batu. The writer used interview and observation as research instrument. The writer used semistructured interview because in addition to questions that had been prepare before, the writer also asked for the question during the interview about the implementation of teaching speaking at SMAN 02 Batu. The result of the present study shows that 1) the objective in teaching speaking that were used by teachers at SMAN 02 Batu were to encourage the students to be fluent in speaking and make kinds of text that were understandable for the students, to express the students’ idea based on the topics, and based on the topics that were given to the students; 2) the topics in teaching speaking were taken from the English book based on 2006 English curriculum; 3) the techniques in teaching speaking were question and answer, retelling and communicative approach; 4) the evaluation techniques in teaching speaking were answering question, oral test and written test. They also evaluated the students that were used affective domain; took the students’ participation and attendance in class, cognitive domain; teacher used the intellectual abilities of the student and gave test like answering question, and psychomotor domain; asked the student to do presentation based on topic that learnt in front of the class.
