- Background: Epilepsy is a complex heterogeneous symptom of a chronic disease characterized by seizures. Valproic acid (VPA) is one of the first-line antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) which has a wide spectrum of mechanisms. VPA is commonly used for management of partial seizures and generalized seizures in epilepsy patients. Purpose: This research aims to determine the pattern of valproic acid use in epilepsy patients related of the type, dose, interval administration, frequency of administration, and route of administration of drugs associated with laboratory data and clinical data of epilepsy patients. Method: This study was retrospective observational with the presentation of data descriptively in patients with diagnoses of epilepsy who received valproate acid medicine at Inpatient Installation of Sidoarjo Regional Public Hospital from January 2017 to December 2017. Results and Conclusions: The most commonly used pattern of single dose therapy is valproate acid 2x250 mg (PO) for 5 patients at amount 38%. The most widely used pattern of valproic acid use was a combination of 2 for 23 patients (46%), the dose given was a combination of 2x250 mg (PO) valproate acid and phenytoin 2x50 mg (IV) for 2 patients (9%). The pattern of using switch was 13 patterns in 13 epilepsy patients. The use of the type, dosage, interval, frequency and route of valproic acid administration is in accordance with existing guidelines and libraries.
