- This study aims to explore communication needs and challenges faced by students in English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). As the commitment to prepare students with the competence to confronts with global competition, the UMM as one of the largest Islamic institution in East Java was required to equip students with communication competence that is able to support them to achieve their future goals. Then, the investigation to discover the immediate need from students is started by inviting several students in focus group discussion (FGD) and the questionnaires were distributed to 475 under-graduated students. Then, by processing iterative approach in collecting and analyzing the data, it found that students’ communication needs had fallen under three main categories namely students’ goals needs and communication skill, teaching capacity improvement and material development, and language program development. This study also provides several the systematic plans to enhance teaching quality and language programs participation for speaking course.
