  • Background of study: Epilepsy is defined as sudden recurrent event considered by heterogeneous complexes symptom. Phenytoin is a hydantoin drug prescribed for general or partial epilepsy treatment. Also, because it is potential and economical, it is considered a first therapy for epilepsy treatment. Objective: This study aims to investigate the pattern of using phenytoin to epileptic related to type, dose, interval management, frequency management, and route of management. It will be attributed with data laboratory and epileptic clinic. Method: This study was observational retrospective by presenting data descriptively to the patients with epilepsy diagnoses who received phenytoin in inpatient installation RSUD Sidoarjo from January 2017 to December 2017 Result and conclusion: For the pattern single therapy, the dose that is given is phenytoin 3x100mg (IV) for 9 patients’ amount 52%. The pattern phenytoin which is most widely used is a combination of two with the percentage (52%). On the other side, the dose most given is phenytoin combination 3x100mg (IV) and diazepam 10 mg (IV) for 4 patients (26%). Moreover, for the pattern use switch 19 patterns for 19 epileptics. In addition, type used, dose, interval, frequency, and route of granting phenytoin is appropriated with guidelines and literary.
