  • This current study was aimed to reduce the effects of residual stresses that make a material have excessive tensile stress caused by welding process. Welding is a combination process of two or more steels by using heat energy. The heat energy contained in the welding process can caused residual stresses in a metal, the residual stress is usually in the metal heat-affected area from welding process or the welding area itself, and the residual stress can caused the metal become brittle, lack of fatigue resistance, lack of weld strength, and also cause reduced corrosion resistance. To reduce the effects of residual stress on the metal, one of them was conducted by means of Annealing Stress Relief method by using heating temperature of 500°C, 600°C and held for 60 minutes then proceed with a slow cooling process in the heating room for 3 hours. The result of the study obtained gratifying value. The strength value of ASTM A36 steel with welding without Stress Relief Annealing has an average tensile strength value of 333,850 Mpa, while the strength value of ASTM A36 steel conducted by welding process and given Stress Relief Annealing treatment temperature of 500°C obtained an average tensile strength value of 312,474 Mpa. The strength value of ASTM A36 steel conducted by welding process and given Stress Relief Annealing treatment temperature of 600°C an average tensile strength value of 299,547, it is known that the original tensile strength value of ASTM A36 obtained an average of 328,099 Mpa. Based on the result of the study known that temperature variations of Stress Relief Annealing can reduce the tensil strength that caused by welding process, and the highest reduction value in the temperature of 600°C.
