- Interpersonal communication between the coaches and the athletes is very important to improve the athletes’ achievements. One of the ways that can be done by the coaches and the athletes to improve the achievements is by doing two-way communication. This research was aimed at finding out the model and the process in interpersonal communication of the coaches to the badminton athletes in the club of Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) in Batu City and vice versa in facing the competition for National Student Sports Olympiad (O2SN) 2018 over East Java province. This research used descriptive qualitative approach in which the research samples were determined using purposive sampling technique based on certain criteria and requirements that have been made. The subjects of this research consisted of 2 badminton coaches and 2 badminton athletes that have passed the selection in O2SN in Batu City. The data collection techniques used interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis was based on Miles and Huberman. The data validity used observation and source triangulation. The result of this research shows that the communication between the badminton coach and the athletes is through two-way communication, i.e. linear communication model (one-way) when the coaches give the instruction to the athletes and two-way communication model (interpersonal) when the athletes ask the question or advice. The obstacles in the interpersonal communication between the badminton coaches and the athletes on the road to O2SN in the province level include the physical obstacles, lack of facilities and infrastructures, and the bustle of each athlete in their formal education.
