  • Background: Propionibacterium acnes were the microorganism which caused the acnes being made worry for adult. Treatment with using antibiotic can caused resistance, so it needed an alternative solution with exploitation the active substance from plant that was Eleutherine palmifolia. Objective: The aim of this study is to know the antibacterial activity of ethanol fraction of Eleutherine palmifolia toward Propionibacterium acnes. To obtained diameter zone of Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction against Propionibacterium acnes growths, find out any kind of substance which contained in the Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction. Method: The antibacterial activity assay using disc diffusion method. Eleutherine palmifolia powders fractionation with different began from n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. In this research the fraction used ethanol. Then, secondary metabolite identified with KLT methods. The concentration Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction used was 20 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, 60 mg/ml. negative control used was DMSO 1%, while positive control used clindamycin 2 μg/disc. Solution test, negative and positive control put on the solid media, and incubated on 37oC for 24 hours. Result and Conclusion: The result of secondary metabolite was showing Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction that were containing alkaloid, terpenoid, flavonoid, polifenol and antrakuinon. The result of antibacterial activities Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction against with Propionibacterium acnes being 20 mg/ml concentrations was (13.16) mm, the concentration of 40 mg/ml was (18.50) mm, and for the concentration 60 mg/ml was (21.33) mm. It can be concluded Eleutherine palmifolia ethanol fraction has activities as antibacterial.
