  • Background: Cardiorespiratoryfitness refers to the ability and efficiency of the heart, circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to skeletal muscles during sustained physical activity and one of the factors that determines the ability and endurance of the body in carrying out long-term activities. Cardiorespiratory fitness is influenced by many factors, one of which is smoking habit. Objective: To examine the relationship between smoking habit and cardiorespiratory fitness among college student smokers at Nursing Science Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Method: This research is an analytic observational study with cross sectional approach. The sampel is 10 male student smokers at Nursing Science Study Program of Muhammadiyah Malang University that was obtained by purposive sampling method. The observerd variables were smoking habit (as independent variable) and cardiorespiratory fitness (as dependent variable). The data were collected by using questionnaire and observation. The data were analyzed by Spearman Rank Correlation with significance p<0,05. Result: Out of 10 samples, the highest number was found have light smoking habit with 6 students (60%), and have a cardiorespiratory fitness in very poor category with 6 students (60%). The result of the analysis using Spearman-Rank correlation obtained correlation coefficient (r)= -0,667 and p value= 0,035. Conclusion: there was a significant correlation between smoking habit and cardiorespiratory fitness with strong correlation and the direction of the correlation is negative. The heavier the degree of smoking habit and more worse the cardiorespiratory fitness.
