Students’ error in solving word problems can be analyzed by using Newman procedure which consists of: reading error, problem understanding error, transformation error, process skill error, and final answer writing error. This research was aimed to know students’ error and the cause of students’ error in solving word problems based on Newman procedure. It was a descriptive qualitative research. The technique of data collection was by using test sheets and Newman interview guide. The result of research was students were not able to understand the error well, they were not able to change the test into mathematical sentences, they solved the test carelessly so it could not determine the completion of method, they were not able to operate fraction, they did not make a conclusion, they are not write a conclusion correctly. The causative factor was the students tended to shorten the time, they did not understand the whole problem and they had not interpreted the problems correctly and appropriately, they were lack of practice in doing story problem, and they did carelessly and hastily.
