- The background of this research because there are obstacles in the aquaculture business that is still often faced by farmers, one of the challenges is the high price of commercial food. Food as an energy source for growth is a fairly high cost component in production that reaches 40-89%. In the control of food for efficiency, it can be done by fasting method. This research is not only aimed to analyze the effect of periodic fasted of giant prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) against growth and feed efficiency. This research was conducted on August - September 2017 at IBAP Installation, Probolinggo District - East Java Province. Materials and tools that have been used include: 3-5 cm giant prawns (360 unit), fresh water, feed containing 30% protein, analytical scales, DO meters, thermometers, and airator. The experimental method used RAL with five treatments and three replications, such as; P0: feeding without fasting (control), P1: 1 day fasted and 1 day feeding, P2: 1 day fasted and 2 day feeding, P3: 1 day fasted and 3 day feeding, P4: 1 day fasted and 4 day feeding, P5: 1 day fasted and 5 day feeding. The results showed that periodic fasted of giant prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) no significant effect on daily growth rate, absolute weight growth and feeding efficiency. However, by looking at the rate of growth and synthesis, then this fasting method can be used as an alternative to feed efficiency. Fasting technique with P5 treatment tends to be most effective in increasing daily growth rate, absolute weight growth, and efficiency of giant prawn feeding. The strategy of periodic fasted in an effort to increase the production of giant prawns should consider the others supporting factors such as ideal water quality (pH, temperature, and DO), proper stocking density, and feeding periods on schedule. There may be further research on pest and disease management that has not been observed more deeply in this study.
