- In the field of agriculture in Indonesia, rice straw is one of the most widely available agro-industrial waste so that researchers use it as mulch material. It is a layer of material to cover the surface of soil or agricultural land by purpose of increasing plant production. Designing and building prototype machine for producing mulch with rice straw material was conducted. Pugh method used in designing mulch production machine. Selection for appropriate components in designing machine was conducted. . Examination on mulch product quality was based on defect percentage (non-uniformity thickness) and tensile test. It was conducted by using Response Surface Method (RSM). Result of this research shows that machine need 0,002 kW to propel rollers while machine rotation is 3,28 rpm and motor rotation is 2460 rpm. And the result of mulch quality can be seen from percentage of disability, where the lowest level of mulching defect is 7,69 % with amount of tapioca composition 8 gram, water composition 60 gram and thickness 2 mm. As well as high quality mulch result is 33,07 % with amount of tapioca composition 6 gram, water composition 50 gram and thickness 1 mm.
