  • Code Switching often occurs on the bilingual and multilingual environment. In Indonesia, people often use more than one language to communicate. Code switching itself is not only found in verbal communication but also can be found easily in non-verbal communication like social media. One of the popular medias is Instagram. The purpose of this study are: 1) To find out the types of code switching and, 2) to know the reasons of code switching used by English Language Education Department students in 9th semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. Besides, the subjects of this study were ten students of English Language Education Department in 9th semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Therefore, the researcher used observation, document analysis, and unstructured interview as the instrument to collect the data. The resut showed that: 1) There are two types of code switching used by the students, those are: Three captions belong to intersentential code switching, and nine captions belong to intrasentential code switching, in addition, 2) there are five reasons of the students using code switching, namely: talking about particular topic, lack of register, to emphasize a point, habitual experience, and to attract attention.
