- English as foreign language has its rules. There are four skills of learning English. One of them is writing. In writing, the students should understand the components of it, such as grammar. Pronoun is one aspect in grammar. Pronoun is a word used to replace a noun. In writing, the use of pronoun is important, especially in writing recount text. This research aimed to know: 1) the types of error made by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 18 Malang in using pronouns in writing recount texts; and 2) the way how the teacher helped the students minimize the errors in using pronouns in writing recount texts. In this research, the researcher used mixed methods.The data collection techniques used in this research was interview and test. Moreover, interview guidelines and students’ writing task are used as data collection instruments. Based on the data analysis, it was found that total number of errors made by the students in using pronouns was 55 errors. There were three types of errors made by the students; personal pronouns were 31 errors, possessive pronouns were 27 errors, and demonstrative pronouns were 2 errors. Moreover, the researcher also analyzed the errors based on surface strategy taxonomy; errors of misordering were 22 (40%) errors, errors of omission were 11 (20%), errors of addition were 9 (16.36%), and errors of misformation were 13 (23.63%). There were three ways to minimize the errors, those are giving a mark in wrong pronouns, giving enrichment texts, and further explanation about pronouns which implemented in texts and doing group discussion.
