- This research aimed at describing the mathematical representation ability reviewed from the characteristics of students’ thinking way of concrete sequential(SK), abstract sequential(SA), abstract random(AA), concrete random(AK) types in problem-based learning. The kind and approach of this research was descriptive quantitative. There were 4 students of 8th grade in SMP as the subjects of this research. The instruments used for collecting the data were questionnaire, observation, and test. Data analysis technique used scoring guidance and percentages of the students’ mathematical representation ability. The results of this research showed that the students (SK) type had good visual representation and symbolic with percentages of 78.8% and 76.3%, verbal representation ability was less good with percentages of 40%. The students (SA) type had good visual representation and symbolic with percentages of 81% and 80.9%, verbal representation ability was less good with percentages of 39%. The students (AA) type had good visual representation and symbolic with percentages of 78.3% and 74.8%, verbal representation ability was less good with percentages of 40.6%. The students (AK) type had good visual representation and symbolic with percentages of 78.9% and 74.6%, verbal representation ability was not good with percentages of 33.7%.
