- Teaching reading in vocational high school is different from other high schools because it should meet specific needs. Furthermore, teaching reading needs the application of appropriate technique, method, and strategy to achieve teaching goals. Based on those problems, the researcher formulates two research questions. First, what are the strategies used by the English teacher of Agriculture Department in State Vocational High School 1 Plosoklaten Kediri to teach reading? Second, how are the students’ responses toward the strategies used by the English teacher of Agriculture Department in State Vocational High School 1 Plosoklaten Kediri? The researcher employs qualitative design to answer the research problem. The researcher chooses one of the English teachers as the research subject. Furthermore, the researcher utilizes observation, interview, and questionnaire as the research instrument. Observation is used to gather the data about strategies used in teaching reading. Interview is used to support the data from the observation. Meanwhile, questionnaire is used to gather the data about the students’ response toward the teaching reading strategy. The data is analyzed and evaluated based on the existing theory. The finding reveals that the teacher used several teaching reading strategy. The strategies are asking and answering questions strategy, drilling strategy, imaging strategy, summarizing strategy and discussion strategy. The students are generally happy with the strategies used in the reading class. Every single item in the questionnaire suggested that the students are happy with the usage of summarizing, asking and answering questions, and imaging.
