- English Language Education Department at Universisty of Muhammadiyah Malang have four elective courses, namely Translation, English for Young Learners (EYL), Business English (BE), and American Studies (AS). Those four elective courses have different emphasis. One of the elective course is American Studies. The researcher has attended American Studies for two semesters. The number of students who choose American Studies were very few 16 students. And year by year the number was getting decreasing. Based on the background that researcher mentioned, the statement of problem of this research is what are the reasons of English Language and Education Department students for not taking American Studies course as their elective course. The purpose of this research was to find out the reasons for not taking American Studies as their elective course. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research because of three reasons. The first reason is qualitative research provides detail and depth. The second reason is qualitative research encourage the researcher to expand their responses that possibly open up areas of new topics that were not originally considered. This research subject is students of English Language and Education Department year 2015. The instrument of this research is interview. interviews is very useful to get the story behind participant experience. The findings of this research is students decided not to take American Studiesbecause of did not see any relevance of the future career, already have a goal, continue their passion, interested in economic and business, have prepared for another elective course few semester ago, have lack of the background knowledge, Senior fellows experiences, withdraw because the number of students attended American Studies is quite low.
