- This study aimed to describe the implementation of cooperative learning model type FGD (Focus Group Discussion) on learning mathematics and know the use of cooperative learning model type FGD on improvement of critical thinking ability and mathematical communication. This research is a kind of academic research using quantitative approach. Data sources are students of class VII A (experimental class), and VII C (control class) MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The data is taken through the observer sheet and test assessment sheet to know the critical thinking ability and the students' mathematical communication. The result of the research showed that the application of cooperative learning model type FGD can be applied in learning mathematics in school using the progress of the steps of implementation, then cooperative learning model type FGD indicate the improvement of good value, critical experimental class higher 14.09% of the control class and average mathematical communication ability of the experimental class higher 14.22% of the control class.
