- This study was conducted based on the interview with one of mathematics’ teacher at SMP Bahrul Maghfiroh Malang. The problems was countered in the students have difficulty in understanding the problem or solve questions of problem solving, especially in finding information covered in the question. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze ability of mathematics’ problem solving based on Polya steps at high, medium and low ability students. The result written based on written test and interview, the research subject are 6 students with three categories that is high, medium and low then analyzed by answer with polya steps. The analysis of information is done with using qualitative descriptive. The results showed that: (1) at a step understand the problem, high ability students, medium and low can explain the relationship between what is known and what is asked and declare in accordance with the correct problem, (2) at the step of preparing the plan, high ability students, medium and low can determine how to solve problems that fit the problem by preparing the plan appropriately, (3) at a step of implementing the plan, high ability students and are not experiencing difficulties in working on the problem but there are still less rigorous, while low ability students tend to make miscalculations, (4) at step checking back, high ability students and low to no checking back while students are capable of doing rechecking.
