- Speaking is one of four skills of English language should be mastered by students as foreign language. Mastering speaking English can be acquired through both formal education (school) and non-formal education (course). Therefore, some strategies are needed in teaching learning speaking process. Teaching strategy is a plan to help the students reach and improve their understanding about a lesson which is used by the teacher in teaching learning activity. Hence, this study was focused on teaching speaking strategies used by the tutor in English Course. This study aimed: 1) to find out the kinds of teaching speaking strategies used to teach the students of Sidney Modern English Course in Pare-Kediri and 2) to describe the implementation of teaching speaking strategies in teaching the students of Sidney Modern English Course in Pare-Kediri. This study used qualitative research method because it described teaching speaking strategies used by the tutor. The subject of this study was a tutor who had been teaching in Sidney Modern English Course in Pare-Kediri. To collect the data, the researcher used observation and interview as the instrument in this study. The result of this study showed that there were seven strategies used by the tutor in teaching speaking for the students. They were discussion, role-play, simulations, storytelling, interviews, story completion and picture narrating. Furthermore, the researcher found that the tutor provided the opportunities for students to talk more than him. He also taught the students to think and feel that English was like Indonesian language. It was shown by forbidding his students to bring the texts or note in practicing speaking English in front of the class.
