  • A barometer of someone who masters the language can be seen from the ability to speak and write. Speaking and writing are the productive skills. Meanwhile, reading and listening are the receptive skill in which those are the main part in learning language. It can be seen that the four skills are interconnected. However, it must be scientifically proven with appropriate data and procedures to determine the strength or weakness of the relationship. Hence, students can find the right strategy in learning and mastering the language. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between student achievement in speaking and writing at seventh semester students of English Language Education Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study uses quantitative research method. The subjects in this study are 20 of seventh semester students majoring in English Language Education where 10 of them are male and 10 others are women. The instrument used to obtain the data in this study is document in the form of transcript. Researcher collects the data through the score of students speaking and writing from 1 to 4. The result of this study points out that Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted and H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected. The significance value of students speaking and writing score calculated through the Pearson Product Moment Correlation is 0.008. Based on the instruction of taking decision, 0.008 < 0.05. It means that students speaking and writing achievement have a positive correlation. Furthermore, the value of Pearson Correlation in this study is 0.575. The amount of Pearson Product Moment is between 0.400 – 0.700. It can be concluded that the strength of correlation is moderate or sufficient.
