- English has been taught in all schools including Vocational High School. Teachers need certain strategies to teach students because the requirement of English mastery is also different from general high school. Technical terms are adjusted with students’ department, such as for mechanical work, business, etc. Before the students get into the core of majors, they should master basic English to prepare before doing apprenticeship. In research, the researcher intended to investigate 1) what are strategies applied by English teacher at 10th grade of ‘Hotel Accomodation’ department at State Vocational High School 1 Batu, 2) what were the problems faced by the teacher, 4) how the teacher implemented the strategy, and 3) how the teacher solved the problems. The design of this research was qualitative research since the data were in the form of words. The subject of this research was one of the English teachers who taught in Hotel Accommodation. In collecting the data, the researcher collected them through three instruments; they were document analysis, observation checklist, and interview. The finding showed that the teacher used two kinds of teaching strategies which were cooperative teaching strategy and interactive teaching strategy. In implementing the strategies, the teacher faced some problems, namely: students’ lack of focus, some of them had difficulty in teacher’s full English, students’ different idea, limited number of English Dictionary, the misuse of Smartphone, some students’ difficulty in pronouncing English words, and some students were lack of sociability. To overcome the problems, the teacher had some actions, namely: the students were warned by the teacher, the teacher repeated the material using Bahasa, the teacher gave an overview of the material they debated, the teacher allowed the use of Smartphone for dictionary, the teacher would confiscate the use of Smartphone if the students disobeyed the teacher’s warning, the teacher helped the students in pronouncing the word, and the teacher grouped the lack sociability students in order that they would interact. In conclusion, teaching strategy is important for the teacher to achieve the goal of teaching and learning process especially in Vocational High School. Using these two teaching strategies, the teacher is capable of providing the basic of English to prepare the students before doing field apprenticeship.
