- Past tenses are one of the important factors which make students feel anxious in learning English. That’s why the teachers should find ways to support students with this problem in their teaching and learning process such as giving more practice to the students and create enjoyable environment. The purposes of this study are: 1) To describe the factors which caused the students’ anxiety in learning “past tenses”, 2) To describe the English teacher’s ways in guiding the students minimize their anxiety in learning “past tenses” at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This research used descriptive qualitative research. Besides, the subjects of this study are students of eleventh- grade of 1st Chemistry class at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang academic year 2017/2018 consist of 20 students. Therefore, the instruments to collect the data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of data of the study showed that 1) there are two factors which causes the Eleventh- grade students’ anxiety in learning “past tenses” at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The first factor is the negative perception that learning “past tenses” is difficult. The second factor is student’s lack of understanding about “past tenses”. In addition, 2) there are three strategies used by an English teacher to guide the student’s minimize their anxiety in learning “past tenses” such as: creating the relaxed situation in a learning process, practicing makes better, and giving students’ motivation.
