  • This research concerns on the error analysis of grammatical errors made by the ninth-grade students of SMPN 2 Lawang in writing recount text. The statements of problem included in this research are (1) what grammatical errors made by the ninth-grade students of SMPN 2 Lawang in writing recount text; (2) what are the possible causes of grammatical errors made by the ninth-grade students of SMPN 2 Lawang in writing recount text. This research was mixed methods research. To collect the data, test was used as the method and instrument in this research. The data were obtained from the students’ recount text. Furthermore, the data were presented in descriptive analysis way. This research showed that there are 775 errors found in the 50 students’ recount texts. The errors were classified into six aspects: sentence pattern, tense, pronoun, preposition, punctuation, and spelling. Punctuation error comprised 198 errors or 25.5% which was considered as the highest frequency of errors. In contrast, the lowest frequency of error was sentence pattern error within the number of 83 errors or 10.7%. The most common possible cause of error was L1 interference. Most of the errors were caused by the L1 interference, especially in the tense, spelling, sentence pattern, and preposition errors.
