- The present study aims to find out; (1) problems faced by the teacher, and (2) solutions to overcome the problems in teaching speaking. This study is a qualitative research using descriptive research design. The data of this study were problems faced by the teacher at grade IX of SMPN 1 Pelaihari in teaching speaking as well as the ways the teacher to cope with the problems. The present study focuses mainly on problems faced by the teacher related to student’s performance in the class. Moreover, the instruments used in collecting the data in this study were observation and interview. The finding of this study shows that there were 4 problems faced by the teacher in teaching speaking. Based on the classification purposed by Ur (2009), the problems faced by the teacher found by the researcher were; the teacher has to face (1) inhibition, (2) nothing to say, (3) low or uneven participation, and (4) mother tongue. Therefore, in order to overcome the problems, the ways taken by the teacher were; (1) reinforcing students to speak by giving motivation, (2) letting students to use dictionary and mobile phone, (3) giving chances to speak and performing group discussion, also (4) performing drilling technique to overcome mother-tongue issue.
