- Some parents who have mentally retarded children are suspected of being difficult to accept their child’s condition as indicated by the condition of parents who experience severe emotional side, difficulty in caring for children, depression, anxiety, nd psychosomatic problems. The presence of emotional intelligence is considered crucial so as to minimize the rejection faced by the parents. This current study is at aim to find out the correlation between emotional intelligence and parents’ acceptance on children with mental retardation. Random sampling was recruited as the research technique and measured by using PPAS scale and emotional intelligence scale. There were 70 parents who have mental retardation children chosen as participants situated in Probolinggo municipality. The results have shown that there are significant correlations found between emotional intelligence and parents’ acceptance. The higher emotional intelligence parents have, the better acceptance they present. These results also apply in reverse situation.
