  • Onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) Lilyceae family from Central Asia is one of horticulture commodity which is often used as a flavoring dish. In addition, onion also contains nutrients and compounds belonging to non-nutritional substances and enzymes that are useful for therapy, as well as improve and maintain the health of the human body. The need for onion in Indonesia from year to year has increased by 5% (Supriatna et al, 2010) Red onion hydrographic cultivation has been carried out for controlled maintenance in the greenhouse to obtain the desired production. One of the production objectives in the greenhouse is to obtain quality seeds, healthy, and can increase farmers' income. This can be achieved by combining high and quality production levels through improving the quality of environmental control. Based on these problems, it is necessary to study the composition of hydroponic planting media made from organic. It is expected that the composition of organic planting media can provide optimal growth and yield of shallot crops. This research use Completely Randomized Design (RAL) consisting of 9 treatments: control (+): soil, control (-): peat, M0: soil + peat (1: 1), M1: peat + charcoal husk (1 : 1), M2: peat + cocopeat (1: 1), M3: peat + sand (1: 1), M4: charcoal husk + cocopeat (1: 1), M5: charcoal husk + sand (1: 1) M6: cocopeat + sand (1: 1). Each treatment was repeated 3 times. The use of organic media composition influences on plant height, leaf number, wet weight and dry weight of shallot plant. The composition of charcoal + sand media resulted in higher and more red onion quantities. The composition of cocopeat + sand media gives the dry weight of onion bulbs better than the composition of mediagambut, soil, soil + peat, peat + charcoal husk, peat + cocopeat, peat + sand, charcoal husk + cocopeat, charcoal husk + sand. While peat provides poor growth on shallot plant because the physical nature of peat is not suitable for the growth of onion planting.
