- Technique is important to be used by the English teacher in teaching and learning process. This study aimed to know the way the teacher implemented think pair share technique in teaching English at the second grade of SMP Negeri 5 Malang. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The writer wanted to know the teacher’s way to use think pair share technique and the reason of using it. The data were obtained through observation and interview. The subject of research was an English teacher of the second grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Malang. The result of the study showed that the technique used by the teacher on the learning process are designed into three steps namely pre-activity, whilst-activity and post activity. The think pair share technique was implemented in the whilst-activity. The teacher’s reasons of using TPS technique in teaching English are a) saving time for preparation, b) helping students to think individually about the topic and answering and c) building oral communication skill.
