  • This study focused on the teaching methods used by the English teacher in reading on the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The purposes of this study are (1) to know the method used by the teacher in teaching reading at Senior High School; (2) to describe the way how the English teacher applied the method in teaching reading at Senior High School; and (3) to describe the students' response toward the methods used by the English teacher in teaching reading at Senior High School. This research was a descriptive study because it was aimed to obtain the information about the implementation of the methods used by the English teacher in teaching reading and to describe the students' response toward teaching method used by the English teacher in teaching reading at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. Additionally, the data collection was conducted used observation, interview, and questionnaire to gather the data on the subjects' opinions, beliefs, and feelings in the situation. The research subjects of this study were an English teacher and the students of the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The result of the study showed that the teacher used two methods in teaching reading. They were Grammar-Translation Method and Cooperative Lerning Method. The teacher used those methods in three stages, they were pre-reading, whilst-reading and post-reading. The students showed positive and negative responses. More specifically most of the students gave positive response toward the methods used by the teacher.
