  • English as an international language is important and very useful in our life. English has been taught to the students in Elementary school who are commonly called as young learners. Teaching English to young learners is not the same as to the adult learners. It is because the way they learn a foreign language is different from adult learners. Regarding the characteristics of young learner, the teacher is required to be more critical and creative in selecting or even combining any techniques available, which is relevant to their characteristics and developmental stage. Young learners have more complex characteristics than adults. They like to play and have fun even in learning situation. In learning English, however, the teacher needs to understand about the techniques and the way the teacher applies the techniques in teaching learning process. In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design to describe: the kinds of technique that used by the teacher in teaching English, and how the English teacher apply the techniques in teaching vocabulary at SDN 01 Kotaanyar, Probolinggo. The subject of this research was the English teacher at the second grade of SDN 01 Kotaanyar, Probolinggo. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation and interview. The result of the research showed that the English teacher at SDN 01 Kotaanyar, Probolinggo used four kinds of techniques in teaching vocabulary to the young learners. They are Visual Techniques, Mime and Gesture, Example of the Type, and Translation. Those techniques were very effective and helpful for the teacher and the students.
