  • The aim of this study is to uncover the correlation coefficient between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of first year students of SMP IbnuNegeri 01 Umbulsari, Jember. The research data were obtained from 36 students and two test as instruments were used in this study. Both tests consist of 25 numbers of multiple choice items which enclose all reading materials. The first test was vocabulary test which included caution, family tree, and shopping. The second was reading comprehension test which included announcement, caution, family tree, procedure text and descriptive text. In other words, both tests were correlated each other. Dealing with the questions of the tests, those were adapted from some books which had been selected as the materials provided for seventh grade. Then, they were validated by the English teacher of first year of SMP Negeri 01 Umbulsari, Jember. After being collected, the data were analyzed using Person Product Moment Correlation. In terms of significances case, the result of this study showed that the correlation coefficient (r-value) was .789 which is higher than the critical value (r-critical) was .329 in 5% level significance. Therefore, the researcher found a strong correlation between studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension.
