- The objective of the research was to prove the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. This study employed correlational non-experimental quantitative design. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kepung Kediri in academic year of 2015/2016. The writer used test to collect the data. The data were collected from 38 students and 25 items test of vocabulary mastery and 25 items test of reading comprehension were given to measure their level of vocabulary and reading comprehension. Then the data were analysized by using PearsonÂ’s Product Moment formula. The result of this reasearch showed that the score of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehensionof the eighth grade students in SMPN 1 Kepung were poor. It was proven by the average score of vocabulary test which was 50.8 and the average score of reading test which was 55.7. Then the result of PearsonÂ’s Product Moment formula showed that the coefficient value (rxy) of correlation between studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension was +0.4337. It indicated a positive correlation between variable X (vocabulary mastery) and variable Y (reading comprehension). To know the significance of variable X to variable Y, the coefficient value (rxy) was compared with table of significance (rtable). Based on the degree of freedom of the number of sample (36), the value of degree of significance 5% is 0.320 and the value of degree of significance 1% is 0.413. It was shown that the coefficient value (rxy) was higher than the table of significance (rtable). Therefore, it proved that there was significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. As a result, this study concluded that vocabulary mastery was contributive in helping the studentsÂ’ reading comprehension.
