  • This study focused on the CATs used by the English teacher on the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The purposes of this study are (1) to identify the types of classroom assessment techniques (CATs) used by the teacher in teaching English at Senior High School; (2) to describe the way to apply the classroom assessment techniques (CATs) used by the teacher in teaching English at Senior High School; and (3) to describe the studentsÂ’ response toward the classroom assessment techniques (CATs) used by the teacher in teaching English at Senior High School. This research was a descriptive qualitative research because it was aimed to obtain the information about the implementation of CATs used by the English teacher and to describe the studentsÂ’ response toward CATs used by the English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. Additionally, the data collection was conducted through interview, observation, and questionnaire to gather the data on the subjectsÂ’ opinions, beliefs, and feelings in the situation. The research subjects of this study were an English teacher on the tenth grade and the students on the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The result of the study showed that CATs used by the English teacher were minute paper and directed paraphrasing. The teacher applied the techniques by modifying the steps to adapt the studentsÂ’ needs and characteristics in the teaching learning process. Moreover, the result showed that the majority of the students had positive response. It was proven by the mean score of 0.545 for minute paper and 0.537 for directed paraphrasing which were categorized as positive response. It was concluded that the implementation of CATs used by the English teacher was accepted by the students.
