- The aim of this research is to investigate whether or not the use of mind mapping technique improves students speaking skill. In this research, the researcher used quantitative research design. The population was the students at Junior High School Level, and the sample was taken from 2 classes at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 8 Batu, they were 7E as the experimental class and 7C as the control class. Each class consisted of 27 students. Moreover, the instrument of this research was performance test which included the studentsÂ’ pre-test and post- test score. The researcher used SPSS version 21 to calculate the significant difference of the studentsÂ’ mean score from the experimental class and control class and to test the hypothesis. The finding of this research showed that mind mapping technique significantly improved studentsÂ’ speaking skill. Based on the studentsÂ’ mean score of pre-test, it showed that experimental class resulted 43.33 and the control class was 40.00. It showed that the mean score of pre-test both of groups has the equal achievement. After the treatment which is used mind mapping technique was applied to the experimental class, the mean score from post-test was different. The experimental class reached 57.04 and the control class was 47.78. From the result of post-test, there was significant difference between experimental class and control class. It was 9.26. Then, the hypothesis testing showed that the level of sig. (2-tailed) is .000, which showed that the significant is below .005, it showed that the alternative hypothesis on this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that mind mapping technique could improve studentsÂ’ speaking skill.
