- Speaking is a skill that enables students to produce utterances which involves expressing ideas and opinions. Among four skills, speaking is the most difficult aspect for students to master since there are a lot of components involved. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to develop studentsÂ’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Ngoro Mojokerto through debate. This study was related to the result of preliminary study showed that the students were still poor in English speaking skills, especially in giving personal response or opinion. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was employed. The data was collected through test and observation. The implementation was conducted in two cycles. Each of the cycle consisted of two meetings. The procedure of research was planning, action, observation, and reflecting. The participants of the study were XIA of SMAN 1 Ngoro Mojokerto. There were 28 students in the class. Most of the students had low achievement in English, especially in speaking. The result of the analysis showed that the studentsÂ’ speaking was successfully improved. The improvement could be seen through the studentsÂ’ score on the second cycle. All of the students were able to achieve target score ≥ 75 based on KKM. The mean of test on cycle II was (80) . In shown, the impmentation of debate technique is able to improve studentsÂ’ speaking ablity at SMAN 1 Ngoro Mojokerto.
