- Emotional intelligence is one of the important things to human being. It refers to intelligence in what people recognize, feel, motivate, and manage emotions in life. Besides, participation is an activity or situation takes a part of activity to get benefit optimally. It will be interesting to know about the correlation between the studentsÂ’ emotional intelligence and their learning participation. The aims of this research are to find out the levels of studentsÂ’ emotional intelligence in English, to find out the levels of studentsÂ’ learning participation, and to know whether there is correlation between the studentsÂ’ emotional intelligence and their learning participation or not in English class of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. The subjects of this research were 76 students taken from eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. The research used in this research was a quantitative research with the correlation design. In collecting the data, the researcher was distributing questionnaires to the respondents and collecting the answer of it. In analyzing the data, the questionnaires were calculated by using SPSS. The result of the research shows that the levels of studentsÂ’ emotional intelligence and their learning participation are high. Then, there is a significant correlation between the studentsÂ’ emotional intelligence and learning participation in learning English. It is proved by the r xy (0.516) is bigger than r table in the significant 5% (0.226).It is considered that the null hypothesis (Ho) of the research is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, the students with the higher emotional intelligence will get better learning participation rather than others. In other words, the students who have good control emotional intelligence will participate actively during the learning process.
