  • Punishment is one of the extrinsic motivations as a tool to make teaching and learning process goes well. It would help students in understanding material through punishments. In order to minimize studentÂ’s mistake the teacher applied punishments in the class, the punishments should be selected to lead students to discipline them in education. The research was conducted to investigate what punishments that teacher used in teaching English for second grade students at SMP Raden Fatah Batu. Hence, the researcher aims to get the data from the teacher through interview and observation and field notes in the class. Descriptive qualitative research was selected in this research. A semi-structure interview and non-participant observation were used by the researcher while having class activity. Based on that observation and data analysis, it was found that there were three punishments found used by teacher in teaching English. They were giving point by using tartib book, rewriting duty or homework five times, and paying every useless word by using money. Giving point was the most dominant punishment used by teacher. The reason why teacher used the dominant punishment due to the more student got points they would be kicked out from the school and it seemed that it was an effective way to make student behave. The researcher also found that the most problem occurred while having a class activity in SMP Raden Fatah was crowded. Hence, the teacher used additional action before giving a punishment by giving a warn to a student.
