- This study focuses on the implementation of small group discussion technique in teaching speaking for the second grade students of junior high school 1 Kadur. The purposes of this study are; (1) to describe the implementation of small group discussion technique in teaching speaking, (2) to investigate the problems faced by the teacher in teaching speaking through small group discussion technique, (3) to know the ways to cope with the problems in teaching speaking through small group discussion technique at Junior high school 1 Kadur. In this study, the descriptive qualitative research design was used because the researcher wanted to investigate some phenomenon in its natural setting. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught second grade students at Junior High School 1 Kadur. There were two techniques to collect the data. They were observation and interview which observation field note and interview guide as the instruments. The research findings showed that the implementation of small group discussion technique in teaching speaking ran well. There were four steps implemented by the teacher in small group discussion technique, they were (1) grouping the students into small groups, (2) deciding a different discussion topics, (3) discussing their topic for at least twenty minutes, (4) presenting the result of the group discussion in front of the class. In applying those techniques, she also faced some problems and did some ways to cope them. First, the students used their mother tongue language. To cope with the use of mother tongue, the teacher controlled the students to keep speaking English during small group discussion process. Secondly, the students create noisy classroom during discussion and pesentation. To cope with noisy classroom, the teacher walked around and reminded students to just focus to the small group discussion. Thirdly, some groups finished their work earlier while other groups had not finished yet. To cope with the problems, the teacher kept students busy by asking them to prepare for the best presentation.
