- Motivation is considered as one of the factors that enhances studentsÂ’ achievement. Motivation as the process by which activities are started, directed, and continued so that needs or goals of learning are achieved (Fernandez and Canado, 2001). This study aims to find out whether there is significant correlation between learning motivation and studentsÂ’ translation competence. This study applied quantitative method and more specifically used correlational study. The population of this study was students of English Language and Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang in 2016/2017 academic year. The total number of the students was 243 students. The researcher took 30 students as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of studentsÂ’ motivation. Meanwhile, the test was employed to collect the data of studentsÂ’ translation competence. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Formula and computed automatically on SPSS program. The result of data analysis showed that the students had high motivation in learning translation (mean > 3.5). Moreover, the value of coefficient of correlation (rxy) was higher than rtable (.720 > .361). This meant that there was significant relationship between studentsÂ’ motivation in learning translation and their translation competence. Based on the research findings, it was implied that motivation had a huge contribution on the studentsÂ’ translation competence.
