- Language is the most important means to communicate with others. Indonesia is multilingual country and Indonesians accomodate varieties of language. They are inclined to mix the codes in their language. Code mixing occured when the conversants used two languages together to the extent that they change from one language to another in the single utterance. English learners can mix the codes in the class especially in ESP speaking class. ESP speaking class is one of the programs held by Language Center of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In ESP speaking, the first-semester students have to speak English when presenting or discussing materials. Yet, most of them mixed their conversation. This study aimed at analyzing code mixing used by the first-semester students of English Language Education Department in ESP speaking at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study was intended to find out: (1) the types of code mixing used by the first-semester students of English Language Education Department in ESP speaking, (2) the reason why the first-semester students of English Language Education Department in ESP speaking mix their language. The descriptive qualitative design was the research design of this study. The instruments used in this study were observation and interview guide. The researcher gained the data from ESP speaking class. The reseacher used a camcorder to record the data. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that there was one type of code mixing used by the first-semester students of English Language Education Department in ESP speaking. It was intra-sentential code mixing. The researcher also found the reason why the first-semester students of English Language Education Department in ESP speaking mixed their language. They were: (1) the students unconsciously spoke Bahasa Indonesia, (2) the students did not know the English words, (3) the students mixed English with Bahasa Indonesia for clarification, (4) the students forget the English words, and (5) the student mixed English with Bahasa Indonesia due to situation. The researcher could say that code mixing is common to be used in speaking class in order to make them easy and comfortable in delivering their message or information.
