Daftar Isi:
- Translation is the process of transferring a message from a certain language into a target language. It is an important thing to bridge two different languages. Commonly, in a translation process, the translators often face many problems. The objectives of this study were to identify the linguistic and non-linguistic problems faced by Translation students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang in translating abstracts from Indonesian language into English language and the solutions of the problems. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The techniques used to collect the data were document analysis and an interview. Furthermore, interview guide and written document, namely translated research abstracts, were the instruments of this study. The subjects of this study were the sixth semester students who joined Translation course. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that the students faced linguistic and non-linguistic problems in translating thesis abstracts. The linguistic problems faced were in diction, acronyms, sentence patterns, proper names and formal word use. Moreover, the non-linguistic problems included the limited knowledge of technical terms of the students, the lack of the studentÂ’s effort to find unrecognized words and the too frequent use of online dictionaries to translate the thesis abstract. Furthermore, the students revealed the solutions to the linguistic problems, namely finding a proofreader, internet connection and references or books related with civil engineering. Then, the solution to the non-linguistic problems was by reading many references and books which could increase the understanding and knowledge about civil engineering.
