- Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is based on the studentsÂ’ need. Thus, the lecturer should decide appropriate method to achieve the learning goal by considering students learning issues. This study is aimed to analyze the kinds of teaching speaking method, the problems faced by the lecturer, and the proposed solution of the problems in teaching speaking at Economic Syariah Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In this study, the descriptive qualitative design was used to acquire the data and analyze it as well. The data were obtained through observing the classroom activity and interviewing the lecturer. In observation, the writer applied non-participant observation and used observation checklist as the instruments to collect the data. In addition, interview was used in semi-structured way. The result of this study indicates that the ESP lecturer implemented two kinds of teaching method while teaching speaking, such as Direct Method and Communicative Language teaching (CLT) method. Additionally, there were six problems and proper solutions found by the ESP lecturer in teaching speaking. There were (1) inhibition. The lecturer solved it by creating a comfortable atmosphere in the classroom and making an interesting activity. (2) Nothing to say. The lecturer overcame it by suggesting the students to read a lot of English text and opened the dictionary when they found the difficult words. (3) Mother tongue use. Settling this problem, the lecturer suggested the students to watch and listen a lot of things related in English. It could be from the music lyric or video. (4) Uneven participation. The lecturer cope this problem by giving attention and pointing out another student to answer the question related to the topic. (5) Incorrect pronunciation. Resolving this problem, the lecturer made a word games which include learning to pronounce the words correctly and suggested the students to listen a lot of things related to English to train them improve the pronunciation. (6) Uncontrolled students. Dealing with this problem, the lecturer had three ways, (1) moving around the class to control the students, (2) reminding the students to pay attention and respect other, and (3) dividing the students into groups then, gave them a topic to be discussed.
