- There are a lot of cases that people might misunderstand about Jihad and terrorism. Jihad is a call for Muslimin to stand up against hypocrites and disbeliever who want to harm other Muslimins. While terrorism is such an immature act that taints Islam without considering the elements of Islam. In order to fix the misinterpretation in society, this thesis is focused on the two aspects that hold important meaning in interpreting Holy QurÂ’an. First is identifying the lexical meaning which is a word meaning based on the dictionary. Second is understanding the contextual meaning based on the historical event and context used. This research employs qualitative approach especially content analysis as a tool for analyzing the presence, meanings and relationships of such words and concepts within texts. The writer used Saheeh International interpretation of English version and Ministry of Religion of Indonesian version as the main data. Through identifying and analyzing four verses of Surah At Taubah, it might lessen the misinterpretation about the implicit meaning of fight,harshness in those verses among people who have less knowledge of Islam. The word fight in English version becomes Perangilah whereas in Indonesian version are produce the same meaning but Allah SWT never teaches Muhammad SAW and his followers to use sword to people who is innocent. Also, He always gives chances to them who want to repent by paying zakah and establishing prayer. However, on the verse 123, the word Harshness in English version becomes kekuatan/kekerasan in Indonesian version, Ministry of Religion chooses to add kekuatan in order to lessen the negative meaning of harshness. By understanding the historical event, it can be concluded that harshness or غِلْظَةً meaning is an act to scare hypocrites and disbeliever by showing firmness and authority. Throughout the long process, the lexical meaning of English and Indonesian versions show dissimilar interpretation and so does the contextual meaning of both translations.
