  • Young learners have different needs, interest, and abilities from adult learner. Teaching English for young learners requiring the teacher to have a thorough understanding of young learnersÂ’ development, needs, and characteristics. The success of teaching speaking for young learners is influenced by the techniques which are used by the teacher. By using appropriate techniques, the teacher is able to encourage the students to be more active in speaking class. The aim of this research were to know: (1) kind of techniques used by the English teacher in teaching speaking to the second-grade students EYL program at University Muhammadiyah Malang and (2) the implementation of the techniques in teaching speaking to the second-grade students EYL program at University Muhammadiyah Malang. This study typically adopted a descriptive qualitative research design since the data were in the form of words, not in the form of numerical data like in the experimental research design. Furthermore, the data were derived fromclassroom observation and data analysis. The researcher conducted five times observations and five lesson plans. The result of this research showed that the techniques used by the English teacher in teaching speaking to second-grade students were conversation practice, using song, answer and question, game language, question and answer drill, repetition drill. The teachers applied the techniques based on the teaching objectives. The teaching objectives reflected in the main activities, and evaluation process.
